Leading European operators launch Android ebook shop with Mobcast

T-Mobile & Orange customers can turn their Smartphones into eReaders

T-Mobile and Orange are the first mobile phone operators to offer thousands of best-selling books to Android users with operator billing, via digital books service provider Mobcast Services Ltd.

With a combined subscriber base of over 30 million, T-Mobile UK, T-Mobile Austria and Orange UK are taking advantage of the consumer demand for digital books. Supplied and operated by Mobcast, the digital book cross-platform will allow customers to buy ebooks & audiobooks from the biggest publishers in Europe and then download them to multiple devices including PC, eReader, Java and Android devices, with the iPhone and iPad to follow later this year.

Rebecca Williams, Head of Marketing at Mobcast, said .It will be interesting if a fixed-priced model for eBooks comes into the UK . which would mean T-Mobile books would sell at the same price as Amazon. It would open up the market to non-traditional book sellers such as the mobile networks, who already have a direct billing relationship and can market back to the customer..
